Survey on information and communication technologies (ICT) usage in households and by individuals
The survey on the information and communication (ICT) usage in households and by individuals is a survey aimed at monitoring the digital level of households. In Slovakia, the survey has been carried out since 2002.
What is the aim of the survey?
The main goal of the statistical survey is to gather detailed information on the level of ICT equipment in households, assess the population's knowledge in using digital technologies, and evaluate the digital skills of people in the Slovak Republic. The data is collected through questionnaires completed by respondents, providing valuable insights into both the current state and long-term development of the information society in Slovakia.
The survey results serve as a crucial foundation for decision-making by public authorities. They support analyses, the development of strategic concepts and policies, the design of subsidy schemes, and the implementation of effective tools and targeted measures-all aimed at enhancing the quality of life in Slovakia through improved ICT usage.
When and where will the survey take place?
The survey is conducted annually, and in 2026 it will take place from April 13 to June 30. Based on a random selection for the year 2026, a total of 5,200 households in 149 municipalities and cities of the Slovak Republic (including the city districts of Bratislava and Košice) are included in the survey.
Who will answer the questions?
The respondent for the survey is one member of the household, aged between 16 and 89 years.
What will we ask?
The questionnaire contains questions for both households and individuals. It collects information on the availability of selected ICT in the household, the frequency and purpose of internet use, and the types of online activities, including e-learning. It also covers the use of e-government services and e-commerce (this module is shortened for 2026).
The survey also includes questions on the use of artificial intelligence tools, the level of digital skills, and a module focused on personal data protection, smart devices connected to the internet (Internet of Things) and green ICT, particularly methods of disposal of electronic devices. Basic demographic characteristics of individuals are collected as well. In addition, beyond the Eurostat methodology, the survey includes questions on the ownership of a mobile phone or a company mobile phone used for private purposes.
How are the household data provided to the Office protected?
All collected data are used exclusively for the needs of state statistics, are confidential and protected according to Slovak and European legislation. The final statistical information is always published in an aggregated form and the data on a specific household and on persons is non-identifiable from them.
Can the respondent refuse to fill out the questionnaire?
The national legislation imposes an obligation on the selected respondent to provide the required information, pursuant to the Act No. 540/2001 Coll. on state statistics in the current version. The Statistical Office of the SR, whose employees shall be under an obligation of confidentiality regarding all statistical and personal data which has come to their knowledge through their work.
The survey is also part of the European Statistical Program and is conducted in accordance with the Regulation of the (EU) No. 2019/1700 of the European Parliament and of the Council and the delegated regulations for the relevant year, meaning that the European legislation also obliges us to do so. It precisely determines and defines the specifics of how to carry out the survey, to what extent, periodicity and to what territorial level, and in accordance with a harmonized internationally comparable methodology.
We greatly appreciate the cooperation of all respondents who participate in the surveys. Their involvement helps identify societal and economic challenges and contributes to the collection of high-quality, reliable data—ultimately supporting meaningful solutions and positive change.
